Did you know that more and more people are taking on reptiles and amphibians as pets? In fact it’s the fastest growing area in the pet industry!
Peoples’ life styles are changing. We are becoming busier and living in smaller dwellings. As such many people simply don’t have the time or space for the more “traditional” pets such as dogs and cats. With their small size and fascinating biology it is no wonder that reptiles are becoming much more popular as pets.
Unfortunately though many veterinarians do not have the necessary knowledge and training to provide appropriate care to these special pets. Little about them is taught at veterinary school and so the vast majority of veterinarians have minimal exposure to these sorts of animals. While much of what veterinarians know about other species can be applied to reptiles and amphibians there are some very particular health concerns that they can develop. Only a veterinarian with the appropriate experience and knowledge can adequately diagnose, treat and prevent the vast array of problems that reptiles and amphibians can develop.
Thankfully Karingal Veterinary Hospital has a team of veterinarians and veterinary nurses that have the necessary experience! Once you step inside our practice one of the first things that you will notice is that our reception and waiting room is a little different to most other veterinary facilities. You will see our clinic pets all on display. Our snakes, lizards, turtles and frogs highlight our dedication to these amazing animals.
In fact that dedication extends to the point of having a separate department within the practice called “The Reptile Doctor”. Founded by Dr Shane Simpson this department caters for all manner of reptilian and amphibian patients… from tiny frogs to large crocodiles… from harmless dragons to some of the most deadly snakes on the planet!
