How to create a puppy friendly home

Posted on: Dec 3 2020

Bringing home a puppy is an exciting experience. Yet, it is important, amongst all the excitement, that you and your home is prepared for the puppy. After all, you want them to feel comfortable and safe in their new home. So, before you pick up your pup, make sure you take the following tips into consideration to create a puppy friendly home.

Check your fences

The last thing you want is to realise that your puppy has escaped while you’ve been out. Check the perimeter of your property to ensure that your property is puppy proof.

Create a special area

Your new puppy should have its own designated area. This will help them feel safe and establish a routine place to sleep.

Be prepared

Be prepared for the arrival of your puppy. This means ensure you have all the basics such as bedding, water bowl, puppy friendly food, insurance, toys, collar and leash.

Don’t overwhelm your puppy

In the first few weeks, it is important to limit visitors. Too many new faces can cause your new puppy to feel anxious. Spend the first two weeks bonding with your puppy and making sure they feel comfortable in their new environment.

Create a routine

Dogs love routines and they quickly learn what to expect each day. This includes feeding them at the same time every day, going outside for toilet breaks consistently, going for your daily walk on schedule and going to bed around the same time each night.

Establish puppy training early

Once you have spent time bonding with your puppy, it is important to introduce them to training. You may wish to train your pup yourself, or you might want to join puppy school. Puppy school allows you to teach your puppy good behaviour in a group environment. Each class has an instructor who can help you with tips and tricks each step of the way.

Remember, you’ll have to change your lifestyle to accommodate your new puppy, but you’ll also gain a best friend for life.
