Popular Cat Series: Sphynx

Posted on: Jun 25 2021

History

Developed from a litter of hairless kittens in 1966, the sphynx originated in Toronto, Canada. This genetically mutated litter was selectively bred with normal-coated cats and then bred back with other hairless cats. This process was not only used to produce the desired breed characteristics but also to widen the gene pool and produce a genetically hardy breed of cat. Its name, Sphynx, is inspired by its resemblance to the cats of ancient Egypt.

Sphynx Appearance

The sphynx is a medium-sized cat with an unforgettable appearance. Its hairless, wrinkled skin makes it an easily identifiable breed. It has large ears with a sleek, but muscular body. The sphynx has a triangular head with wide-set eyes and long, slender legs. Although they are called hairless, they do have a very fine cover of hair but do not have whiskers or eyelashes. Its colour and pattern are from the pigmentation of its skin.

Personality

Sphynx are high energy cats, known for their intelligence, curiosity and affection for their owners. They are friendly, loving and crave human attention and will often follow their owners around the house. They are best kept as an indoor cat, and generally get along well with children and other pets. This is an active breed that enjoy jumping, playing and climbing, as well as normal cat scratching, so make sure you provide scratching poles and toys.

Sphynx Health Care

Despite being hairless, the sphynx is not a hypoallergenic cat. It generally has few health problems but are known to develop hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and hereditary myopathy. These cats are sometimes prone to skin conditions such as urticaria pigmentosa (a type of allergy-based skin disease) and periodontal disease, and also should be provided with regular teeth brushing and dental check-ups.

Owner’s Responsibility

Sphynx cats tend to have oily skin and need to be bathed regularly to avoid becoming greasy and developing sores. Special care should also be taken to protect these cats from sunburn and skin damage, as well as from cold temperatures. Like most cats, their ears should be checked weekly for wax build-up and yearly vet check-ups should be maintained.
